Time for parent-teacher conferences

"Believe it or not, it's the end of the first quarter -- time for parent-teacher conferences. And unlike the school open house events held in September -- where families saw an overall picture of their child's classroom experience and were gently asked not to monopolize a teacher's time -- parent-teacher conferences are designed especially for individual concerns and specific questions....."This is a time to really develop strategies for student success," said Ruscel Reader, principal at Cesar E. Chavez Elementary. "It's also another opportunity for in-person connections between parents and teachers, which is really what a child's success is all about.""

For Pupils, A Snapshot Of History

If a picture really is worth a thousand words, then this shot is worth a thousand more memories. With the closing of Mesa Marin Raceway and its impending demolition -- making way for new housing in the foothills east of Bakersfield -- the annual panoramic photograph for nearby Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School got a special, historic twist.

This year, instead of the normal, on-campus location, the photo session took place on the steep banking of Turn 1 at the famed half-mile, paved oval with more than 450 Chavez students, school staff, a few parents, other district representatives and track owner Marion Collins in attendance.

Chess Lessons About More Than Just The Game

Chess lessons at Cesar E. Chavez Elementary go far beyond how students can best fortify the queen.

"It improves their critical thinking, their ability to focus and concentrate," said David Huff, a parent volunteer at Chavez, who coordinates the chess activities each weekday morning in the school library before classes start.

"But, at the same time, the kids learn how to interact with each other, how to help other kids and how to give a team effort -- in terms of what they're learning, yes, it is more than just the actual game of chess."
