Our Mission

Chavez accepts the responsibility to educate and challenge all students in a caring atmosphere that assures academic achievement and further develops social and emotional growth. Our mission is to provide a positive and effective integrated learning environment. Our school will give all students successful experiences that promote high achievement and will create respect and appreciation for self and others.

Vision
Chavez staff and students are also proud of our motto, “Excellence in education is our goal . . . making it happen is our role,” as this motto captures what it takes to meet our goals and have exemplary performance and sustained student improvement.

Positive Learning Environment
Chavez has school programs and practices that promote a positive learning environment. We have an established record for improvement, a faculty that is professionally skilled and personally committed to meeting the learning needs of students and a student body which is enthusiastic and motivated to perform well. We set high standards for our students and they achieve them. Our students are provided a rich curriculum that reaches beyond the classroom walls. Chavez students shine in Oral Language Festival, Young Authors’ Fair, Science Fair, Math Bowl, Spelling Bee, Flag Team, Anti-Graffiti Contests, Track and Field competitions and award winning chess teams.  Chavez Magnet School is known throughout Kern County as a dynamic community of learners.

The staff is committed to meeting the needs of all students.  The staff works cooperatively together and participates in shared decision making. Programs are available for GATE, At-Risk, English Language Learner, and Speech students.  An instrumental music teacher offers programs two days each week.  The Computer Lab serves both the regular day and Magnet Program.  Two fully credentialed science teachers serve both the regular day and Magnet Program.  There are two autistic classrooms with the inclusion of an extended day program.  Chavez also has one Special Education/Resource classroom and a Reading Lab.  Computers and the Internet are available in all classrooms as well as the computer lab.  The Library is fully automated with an on-line catalog.  Homework classes and after-school tutoring have been implemented at the school.  Quarterly awards programs and assemblies are held to recognize student achievement and perfect attendance.

General Information
Cesar E. Chavez Science Magnet School  was built in 1994 and located in the northeast part of Bakersfield, Chavez was named after Cesar Estrada Chavez, the founder of the United Farm Workers. Chavez serves approximately 400 students a year in grades K-6. Our population includes three Special Education Autistic classes. Our Learning Lab was redeveloped to meet the educational needs of identified special needs students. We are a science-centered magnet school. For parents interested in a strong science-centered curriculum and parents in need of day care, Chavez School offers an intriguing option.

Students attend regular day core academic classes from 8:12 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. and extended day Magnet classes until 5:00 p.m. After their regular school day, students attend three forty-minute magnet activity periods with a snack recess. Special activities for kindergarten students are also provided.

In 2002 Chavez was recognized by the California Department of Education as a California Distinguished School.
